For driving in Namibia, foreign visitors must have full valid driver licences issued their domestic countries. If a driver license is not in English, a driver (an owner of the driver license) must also have an International driving permit.

The main road traffic rules:

• Traffic flaws on the left hand side.
• Seatbelts are compulsory for all people in the car.
• It is not permitted to use a mobile phone whilst driving.
• The permitted blood alcohol limit is 0.05%.
• At intersection with “stop” signs, the person arriving first has right of way.
• The speed limit is: on motorways – 120 km/h (75 mph); on open roads – 80 km/h (50 mph); in built up areas – 60 km/h (37 mph).

Additional information:

• While driving, drivers should always be very careful and lookout for animals which are common on the rural roads. Elephants, warthogs, and kudus may be a serious problem so drivers should heed warning signs and try to avoid driving at night.
• During the rainy season, it may be impossible to use some roads since flooding. It is recommended to avoid crossing flowing water because it may be deeper than looks.
• In Namibia, road traffic signs are in English.
• In and out of Windhoek, there are roadblocks. Drivers must show their driver licenses when crossing roadblocks so they should to carry their driving licenses at all times while driving.
• Drivers should carry while driving valid driver licences and international driving permits, registration and insurance documents.
• It is recommended to drive with the dipped headlights even during the day as roads can be dusty.
• Whilst driving, it is recommended to keep a firm grip with both hands on the steering wheel since it is easy to lose the car control on gravel roads.
• It is recommended to observe road signs especially “curve ahead”.
• On gravel roads, the best way is driving in tracks.
• When driving to long distance, it is recommended to have drinking water and a jerrican with fuel.
• To rent a car, a driver must be 23 years of age and has held a valid driver license for one year or more. Some rental car companies require drivers to be 25 years of age and charge an additional insurance fee from drivers whose age is between 21-25 years.
• Many petrol stations take cash only.
• When driving on a gravel road, drivers should keep a safe distance to a front vehicle.
• It is recommended to rent 4x4 vehicles when travelling through remote areas.
• Tolls are charged for each section of the motorway and are depending on the distance travelled. It is recommended always have some change when driving.
• The red and white markings on the road mean "no parking zone" and parking there is not permitted. The yellow and white markings denote short-term parking spaces. Diagonal white lines indicate motorcycles parking space only.
• Fines can be paid at the local police station.
