For driving in Liechtenstein, it is required a full driving license. For visitors from non-European countries, drivers should have International driving permits further to their original driver licenses since foreign driver licences may be not valid on its own in Liechtenstein.

The road traffic rules:

  • Driving is on the right side.
  • The minimum age for driving is 18 years.
  • The minimum age for car hire is 21 years.
  • It is required to wear seatbelts at all times while driving to everyone in the car.
  • It is mandatory to wear a crash helmet while riding a motorcycle.
  • It is obligatory to have in inside the car a warning triangle.
  • The legal alcohol blood level is 0.05%.
  • The speed limit in residential areas is 30 km/h, built areas 50 km/h, outside the built areas 80 km/h, on dual carriageways 100 km/h, and on motorways 120 km/h.
  • The dipped headlights are obligatory when driving through tunnels even if they are shined.
  • It is not permitted to use any radar detection equipment.
  • Children under 12 years and less than 150 cm must be ridden in special children holding systems.
  • Children under 7 years of age can't sit in the front seat.
  • As a rule, pedestrians have right of way.
  • When driving, it is not permit to use a mobile phone without hands free system.
  • It is mandatory to indicate before moving back into the right-hand lane when overtaking.
  • The Third-party insurance is mandatory.
  • It is not permitted honking after dark.
  • It is not permitted the noise from car occupants that could disturb people.
  • Drivers using spectacles or contact lenses must have spare spectacles in the vehicle.
  • In some winter conditions, snow chains are obligatory.
  • Driving is not permitted when the windscreen is partly or completely obscured by frost.
  • It is not permitted to let the car idle to aid clearing the windscreen.

Some additional information and advices:

  • The passing beam is recommended for all cars.
  • Police phone number is 117.
  • In Liechtenstein, there are not tall roads.
  • Vehicles registered outside Liechtenstein need to have a sticker on their backs.
  • Hitch-hiking is not permitted on motorways and other major roads.
  • It is recommended to have: spare bulbs for external lights, a fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit.  
  • During the day, it is recommended to sound a horn before going round a sharp bend with limited visibility. At night, it is recommended to flash headlights.
  • While driving, any driver must carry his driving permit, International driver license if it is required, insurance details, car registration documents, and an exhaust emissions test certificate.
  • Free parking places for unlimited time are marked as “White zones”.
  • A pay-parking with time limitations are marked as “White Zones Pay & Display”. Drivers must display tickets bought at street machines on dashboards.
  • Blue Zones are places for vehicles with displaying blue parking discs which available from police stations, tourist offices, and banks. Blue parking discs must be set to the time on parking. Usually, it gives 90 minutes of free parking.
  • Parking is free for up to 15 hours for cars with red parking discs which available from police stations, tourist offices, and banks.
  • It is prohibited to park at places marked as “Yellow Zones”.
